Jatinga is a small village in the north-eastern state of India, Assam. It is commonly known as valley of death for birds. Assam is popular for its historical fame and for nature’s gift i.e. beautiful mountains all over the world. It is a place where mysteries and dissonant events used to happen every year. Jatinga is famous for the bird mystery and has already grabbed the attention of many scientists.
Migratory birds including tiger bittern, little egret, black bittern, pond herons, Indian pitta, and kingfishers travel to Assam and get affected by the mysterious events occurring in Jatinga. But not only the migratory birds, but the local birds also did similar things. They mysteriously die by suicide. It is cited by many ornithologists that it is a mystery because the birds are not known to have suicidal tendencies. It is also revealed by their research that birds commit suicide during the late monsoon between September and November when most of the water bodies in Assam are flooded. Jatinga falls in the migratory places for the birds because the birds lose their natural habitat so they have to migrate to other places.
But why does this mass suicide of migratory birds take place every year?
A bona fide reason behind the Jatinga bird’s suicide is not confirmed as there are many different reasons given by the researchers. Some theories have come up suggesting that weather conditions do not favor the birds and the climate of the areas leads to a change in the magnetic qualities of the below groundwater which causes the confusing state of the birds.
One possible reason which is given about this phenomenon is the usage of high power light sources on the hilltops in the areas, which attracts the birds flying at that time. Birds dive down towards the light and get killed upon landing the electric poles. It is also discovered that lighting fires also attract the birds like magnets.
Many villagers believe that there are evil spirits that fly in the sky and are responsible for killing the birds. The native people consider the arrival of these birds as a Gift of God because they get an opportunity to trap the birds and cook them to have their meal, which is superstitious. But Jatinga is not the only place in the world where such bizarre conduct of birds is observed. It is also seen in the Philippines, Malaysia, and in one more state of India, Mizoram. This makes Jatinga a terrifying place to visit where enigmas emerge over people.
