ARK: Survival Evolved is an action-adventure survival video game developed by Studio Wildcard, in collaboration with Instinct Games, Efecto Studios, and Virtual Basement. The game is officially released on Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
The game features a mixture of action-adventure survival video game elements as well as sandbox-style creativity. Players must survive being stranded on an island teeming with dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. Players may fight against the wildlife using weapons crafted from resources gathered or build shelters to protect against nocturnal predators. Players also have the ability to tame certain dinosaur species through a combination of feeding them food and administering narcotics to keep them pacified; this allows players to ride some of the animals like a modern mount. Structures can be built to expand upon the player’s habitat. Other players may come and join them on the island; these other people are shown within a separate screen, which allows communication through voice chat.
Some resources must be acquired by killing dinosaurs, while others are available for gathering. The game includes several hundred different dinosaur species within its world, many of them being based upon real-world prehistoric species such as “Allosaurus”, “Argentinosaurus”, and “Triceratops”. Dinosaurs in ARK: Survival Evolved start out small (about the size of a small human), but grow much larger over time if they eat enough food. This growth pattern is similar to Minecraft’s animals. More passive creatures include herbivores such as “Parasaurolophus” and “Stegosaurus”, while carnivores include “Brontosaurus”, “T-Rex”, and “Spinosaurus”
There are currently four different maps able to be played, with the only difference between them being the time of day in which they take place. The maps include The Island (which is both at high noon and dusk), The Center (day/night cycle takes about 30 minutes), Primitive Plus (at least a year’s worth of day/night cycles), and Extinction Core (at least two years’ worth of day/night cycles). As Studio Wildcard updates the game, more maps will become available for gameplay.
